Our Mission
The Education Rights Network is comprised of a dedicated group of parents and caregivers who are working to ensure equity and inclusion for all students in Pittsburgh Public Schools. In addition to reviewing and analyzing suspension data and raising awareness of the issue, ERN works to educate and support parent leaders via “Know Your Rights” workshops and provides direct help in navigating the District’s Code of Conduct and discipline procedures. ERN has successfully mobilized and supported parent leaders to rally for necessary changes to the District’s discipline policies and practices, and has achieved wins including the ratification of some recommended changes to the district’s Code of Conduct.
Our Campaigns
Community Schools
Our goal is to assist with the development of sustainable community schools that will offer resources and support needed within the communities to contribute to successful outcomes for students and families.
solutions not suspensions
Black, brown, and students with disabilities are being pushed out of school by the way of suspensions more than any other students. Our goal is to work with the district to develop solutions that can be used in place of suspensions to keep students in school and learning.
Police free schools
Police in schools criminalize black and brown students more than any other population of students, therefore our goal is to divest from school safety budgets and invest in peacebuilders, intervention workers, counselors and other support staff to create safe, positive and supportive environments for learning.
disability justice
Allegheny County school districts struggle to deliver adequate, equitable education for children with disabilities and continue to neglect our students by not providing appropriate support and services. For the past 8 years, the Education Rights Network has armed economically disadvantaged, Black parents and guardians with the necessary tools to advocate for their children’s needs. We find that parents who know their children’s rights and are empowered to advocate for them, are more effective and able to fight to ensure that their children receive the services they deserve.
ending school PRIVATIZATION
Charter & Cyber Charter schools are bleeding our already scarce public school budgets dry. Current charter tuition payments from Pittsburgh Public Schools now are approaching $120 million, roughly 18% of the district budget. We need charter transparency and accountability at the local and state level.
school funding
We need to divest from the over criminalization of students and invest in supports and services at the local, state and federal levels.
fighting school closures
Pittsburgh faces school closures right now. Witout speaking up and speaking out the district will push through closures without any community input or inovation.
